Trial and Execution
Chikatilo was brought to court on April 14, 1992, nearly 16 years since his first murder. Throughout the trial, he was held in an iron cage as to protect the families of his victims (see above). His behavior in the court room ranged from boredom to crazed actions. Chikatilo was observed singing, speaking gibberish, and he even dropped his pants for the entire court room to see.
During the trial, the judge appeared less than impartial, but even so the trail lasted 4 months and did not end until August of that year. Chikatilo was found guilty of 52 of the 53 murders he was accused of, and he was sentenced to death for each murder.
Chikatilo was executed by a shot to the head on February 14, 1994.
